Teaching Center for Foreigners (CEPE)

CEPEThe Centro de Enseñanza para Extranjeros (Teaching Center for Foreigners) was created in 1921 with the mission of universalizing the knowledge of the Spanish language and the Mexican culture, projecting the presence of UNAM in the international context, and developing academic programs directed to Mexican communities abroad, as well as supporting foreign students who wish to enroll with UNAM. This center offers courses in five main areas: Spanish, Art, Literature, History, and Mexican-American Studies. CEPE also teaches mandatory courses in History, Geography, and Mexico’s Political Organization to graduates who have studied abroad. Students from more than 100 countries have studied at CEPE.

School of Architecture

School of ArchitectureFounded more than 250 years ago, the undergraduate program in Architecture offered by this school is the oldest in its kind in the American continent. Successor of the Antigua Academia de San Carlos, it has played a key role in shaping Mexico’s architecture. It also offers programs in Scenery Architecture, Urban Planning and Industrial Design. This academic structure is conformed by 16 workshops where the students receive a theoretical and practical education enabling them to face the challenges in their professional life. The School of Architecture constitutes space adapted for the development of it creative activity with plurality of options and approaches.

School of Sciences

School of SciencesCreated in 1938 with its current name, the school has its origin in The National School of Higher Studies. For more than six decades, it has been the principal institution in the education of men and women of science that Mexico needs. It offers academic programs in fields of Actuarial Science, Biology, Computer Sciences, Physics and Mathematics.119 research lines are carried out within this school. Among its publications, stand out Ciencias magazine, with recognized prestige among the national scientific community, the Mathema collection, and different monographs including topic related to biology, actuarial science, and mathematics.

School of Political and Social Sciences (FCPyS)

School of Political and Social SciencesWith more than 50 years of existence, it is the principal institution in education of the country’s specialists in Public Administration, Communication Sciences, Political Sciences, International Relations, Sociology. Mexican sociology could neither be understood nor applied without the contributions of this school, particularly with respect to empirical research, and to the definition of solutions to social problems. It is one of the main institutions in Mexico devoted to the scientific social research. The school is organized in five coordination offices: Communication and Information, Rights and Culture of Indigenous Communities, Migration and Political Participation, Political and Electoral Progresses, Journalism and Human Rights, four centers of studies: Public Opinion, European Studies, Latin American Studies, and Social Theory Basic Studies, and six seminars.

School of Accounting and Administration (FCA)

School of Accounting and Financial ManagingThis school possesses a seventy-year long history of educational service. It offers academic programs in Accountancy, Computer Science, and Administration. Besides the local students, an important number of students from several Latin American countries participate in the school’s advanced and updated courses. It encourages the creation of new companies, by offering consultancy for its consolidation and success. It also provides support to small taxpayers for the fulfillment of their fiscal obligations, and it supports with consultancy and the diagnoses the micro and small-scale enterprises.

School of Law

Law SchoolThe origin of this school goes back to the Universidad Real y Pontificia de México (Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico). One of its first lectures was Prima de Leyes e Instituta given by Dr. Bartolomé Frías y Albornoz. Its contemporary antecedent is the Escuela Nacional de Jurisprudencia (National School of Jurisprudence), founded in 1867 by President Benito Juárez, and which in 1910 became part of the newly established Universidad Nacional de México, and in 1951 began to offer doctoral studies. Knowledge plurality and liberty of thought are fostered in its classrooms. The students receive an education of excellence, taught by the most qualified teaching staff of the country. Due to this liberty and responsibility, the students also receive a wide overview of the justice phenomenon and its assessment implications. The school has a very important library to be consulted by academics and students, and the general public.

School of Economics

With more than 70 years of experience, the school of economics has formed several generations of economists who have greatly influenced Mexico’s social and economic development. Its graduates obtain a wide and plural knowledge about economic culture and the social economical realities at national and international levels. The research work developed in the school constitutes a substantive task in the academic work of its teaching staff. The diversity of activities where this work is done is materialized everyday in written collaborations published in newspapers, magazines and books, through media interviews and participation in debates and analysis panels on radio and television.

School of Philosophy and Literature (FFyL)

School of Philosophy and Literature

Its origin goes back to the Colonial Age and its direct precedent is the National School of Higher Studies. This school teaches the programs in Library Science, Intercultural Development, and Negotiation, Latin American Studies, Philosophy, Geography, History, Hispanic Language and Literature, Modern Language and Literature (German, French, English, Italian, and Portuguese), Classical Literature, Dramatic Literature and Theater, and Pedagogy. Seven of these programs may be coursed in the open and distance education system. Its excellent teaching staff, the richness of its academic life, the quality of its students, and its wide tradition have made of this school to be ranked among the best in the world in the field of humanities and arts.

School of Engineering (FI)

School of EngineeringIt is the first institution teaching engineering in the American Continent, and it is considered as the first science premises in this part of the world. For more than 200 years, it has promoted the advancement in applied research and in the technological development of Mexico. The school offers the following fields specialization: Civil, Mines and Metallurgy, Electric and Electronic, Computer/Computing Science, Telecommunications, Geophysics, Geology, Geomatics, Industrial, Mechanics, Mechatronics, and Petroleum Engineering. The contribution of this school to the transformation of the different branches of engineering and of the social and productive spheres in our country is evidenced with the national and international awards and distinctions that its professors and alumni constantly receive.

School of Medicine

School of MedicineFrom January 1579, when the first medicine course was established in the Real y Pontificia Universidad de México, until our days, the School of Medicine has entered its efforts in supporting its academic excellence for the sake of the students. It teaches the courses Medical Surgeon and Basic Biomedical Research. It is focused on educating highly qualified surgeons and graduates, who are able to exercise the leadership of Mexican medicine, and to contribute to the development of the original research. The set of its activities is ruled by qualified scientific and academic knowledge, innovation capacity, and humanism. Its academic staff carries out 243 lines of research, with a scientific production of more than two articles per researcher a year in index-linked magazines.

School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FMVZ)

School of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnology

It is the oldest veterinary school of the American Continent. With its eighteen departments, two hospitals, seven computing centers, and seven teaching-research and animal breeding extension centers distributed in different states of the country, the school has one of the largest and better-equipped infrastructures in the world. In 2005, it started a new curriculum which is more flexible, and which gives preference to practical teaching. This allows the graduates to respond in an agile, rapid, and flexible way to the emergent demands and new requirements that society could rise in the future. This school hosts the Postgraduate Program in Animal Health and Animal Production Sciences, which, with its 301 accredited tutors, constitutes the most important program of its kind in Latin America. It has hospitals and ambulatory clinics that offer consultation to society in general, both in the facilities of University City and in other states of the Mexican Republic.

School of Dentistry

School of Dentistry

UNAM’s School of Dentistry carries out 90% of the scientific research that is done in Mexico in the subject that has a high impact in teaching. In addition to the undergraduate and the masters and doctoral programs, it also offers ten specialization programs. It has nine clinics located in the suburbs of Mexico City and 40 in the school’s central building. It also offers free treatment through brigades of social service and through agreements in health and governmental sector institutions. The school permanently takes part in six health programs, organized in seven states of the country.

School of Psychology (FPSI)

School of PsychologyThe College of Psychology was originally constituted as part of the School of Philosophy and Literature, where its first curriculum – taught since 1938 – was formulated. In 1973 the college became the current School of Psychology by establishing its master and doctoral programs. This school is a leader in our country, in the field of the instruction and the research of this discipline, and it educates high-level psychologists. It offers an undergraduate program in six major areas, both in the full-time and in the open and distance education system. It also participates in the postgraduate programs of Medical, Dentistry and Health Sciences, and in the Master of Arts in Teaching in Middle and Higher Education.

School of Chemistry (FQ)

School of ChemistryIt is the first school of chemistry in the country, and during 90 years it has prepared and educated many generations of professionals, both in the research and in the productive fields. It offers undergraduate programs in Chemistry, Food Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgic Chemical Engineering, and Pharmaceutical Biological Chemistry, certified by external organizations. Its graduates have played a key role in the national development of the food industry, sugarcane-processing plants and oil refineries, participating in the design, construction, and operation of Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) plants as well as in those of the private sector.

School of Arts and Design (FAD)

School of Arts and DesignDuring its more than 200 years of existence, this school has been a vital space for the development of Mexican culture. It offers undergraduate programs in Visual Arts, Design, and Visual Communication. It houses the postgraduate program in Visual Arts, with a master and doctoral program. It covers five aspects: painting, graph (engraving, and photography), sculpture, urban art, and communication, and graphic design. At present it has joined in a vehement way the different avant-garde movements and, in the last years, to cutting-edge technology applicable to the information management, visual arts and design as a whole. It is a trustee of a heritage of over 60,000 historical assets composed of sculptures, paintings, stamps, drawings, photography, numismatic and bibliographical goods, and it is in charge of its safe-guard, enrichment, and dissemination for the benefit of society.

School of Music (FaM)

School of MusicEstablished in 1929 and located in the traditional neighborhood of Coyoacán, this school is one of the most renowned professional training centers in this discipline. It offers technical-level and undergraduate programs in Singing, Composition, Musical Education, Ethnical Musicology, Instrumentality (in 21 majors) and Piano. Many of the well-known Mexican soloists, composers, and orchestra directors have been its professors or students. Its Laboratory of Musical Informatics and Electro-Acoustics Music that serves as support to the teaching/learning process, furthers the development of international informatics exchange networks and impels the creative research on the artistic possibilities of technology.

School of Higher Studies — Acatlán (FES Acatlán)Founded in 1975 as the National School of Professional Studies in the municipality of Naucalpan, in acquired in 2004, the status of School of Higher Studies, in recognition to its excellent academic and cultural consolidation. It offers following undergraduate programs: Actuarial Science, Architecture, Political Sciences and Public Administration, Communication, Law, Graphic Design, Economy, English Learning, Philosophy, History, Civil Engineering, Language, and Hispanic Literature, Applied Mathematics, and Computation, Pedagogy, International Relations, and Sociology. Law, International Relations and Language Teaching (Spanish, French, German, and Italian) as a Foreign Language —the latter also available in the distance education option— which is also offered through the open system. It is worth mentioning that this school stands out not only for the diversity of the languages that are taught there, but also for the international examinations that are given for English, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese.

School of Higher Studies – Aragón (FES Aragón)

School of Higher Studies - Aragón (FES Aragón)Inaugurated in 1976 as the National School of Professional Studies, in 2006 it became the School of Higher Studies Aragon. It is an alternative for the inhabitants of the northeastern area of Mexico City with respect to quality university education and a high sense of social responsibility, besides being the principal source of cultural, sports, and supporting activities for the community in its surroundings. This campus offers fifteen programs, all of them credited by national organisms external to UNAM: Architecture, Communication, and Journalism, Law, Industrial Design, Economy, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electric Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electro Mechanical Engineering, Pedagogy, Agricultural Development Planning, International Relations, and Sociology. It also offers an in bridge construction specialization course, and it partakes in the postgraduate programs in Architecture, Law, Economy, and Pedagogy.

School of Higher Studies —Cuautitlán (FES Cuautitlán)This was the first multidisciplinary unit of UNAM, and it started its operation in April 1974. At the beginning, it offered only eight programs. Over the years, the institution, which became a higher studies school in 1980, has grown and matured in every aspect, for instance, increasing the students’ matriculate and the academic options. Consequently, FES Cuautitlán offers today 15 additional undergraduate programs. The programs currently offered are: Design and Visual Communication, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Biochemistry, Food Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Accounting, Management, Informatics, Electromechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Biochemical Diagnostics, Pharmacy, and Technology.

School of Higher Studies — Iztacala (FES Iztacala)Originally founded in 1975 as the Escuela Nacional de Estudios Superiores, in 2001 the University Council approved its transformation into a School of Higher Studies. Its goal is to consolidate as an academic, professional, and cultural development area of excellence, developing human resources in the fields of Biological and Health Sciences, as well as of Social Sciences, with an enterprising and innovative attitude, a social commitment, a high human touch, a national and an international presence, giving the priority to its area of influence. FES Iztacala offers the program of Nursing at a technical level, undergraduate programs in Biology, Dental Surgery, Medical Surgery, Optometry, and Psychology. It takes part of the postgraduate programs in Psychology, Ocean Sciences and Limnology, and Biological Sciences. It hosts the specialty in Endo-Periodontics.

School of Higher Studies — Zaragoza (FES Zaragoza)It was established in 1975 to serve specially the population of the eastern area of Mexico City. In 1993 it was designated School of Higher Studies with the creation of the Doctorate in Sciences. It projects itself as a higher-education institution, which is a leader in the cultural, humanistic, scientific, and technological education of professionals committed to human and sustainable development and to multicultural society, by an educational model which privileges the learning paradigm, curricular flexibility, inter discipline, and value education. The School offers seven undergraduate courses: Biology, Dentistry Surgeon, Nursing, and Obstetrics, Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Psychology, and Pharmaceutical-Biological Chemistry. Its research and postgraduate areas are carried out in two architectonic complexes, which harmonize with murals, stained-glass windows, and sculptures of different national artists. It has eight clinics located in Mexico City, and seven more in the State of Mexico attending an average of 70,000 patients a year in dentistry, psychology, and general medicine, among others. Within its facilities there are areas for sports, cultural activities, and foreign languages.

University Center of Cinematographic Studies (CUEC)

University Center of Cinematographic Studies (CUEC)Founded in 1963, it is the oldest cinema school of Latin America. It forms cinema and television professionals in the areas of Direction, Writing, Photography, Editing, Sound, and Production. Its recognition in the film environment is such that a graduate from this center virtually takes part in every Mexican cinematographic production. It is one of the top cinema schools in the world according to the number of film productions it makes in a year. Its students make every year more than 30 short films as a part of the teaching/learning process.

University Theater Center (CUT)

University Theater Center (CUT)The Centro Universitario de Teatro (University Theater Center) has as main purpose the training of theater actors, directors, and technicians. It has consolidated as one of Mexico’s well-known schools in its field. It educates professionals who enrich both the university theater and the national scene. The center teaches acting undergraduate courses based on four years of classroom work, three verification theater productions, and a final mise en scene.

National School of Nursing and Obstetrics (ENEO)

National School of Nursing and Obstetrics (ENEO)The National School of Nursing and Obstetrics is the institution in charge of training human resources in nursing, and it is the school with more tradition in Mexico, and which has a fist-class academic infrastructure. It contributes to the profession’s development through teaching, researching, and dissemination of the knowledge in the health-care systems. Its direct work with society through its primary attention clinic located in Xochimilco, allows to link teaching with service, and with different projects of university extension.

National School of Social Work (ENTS)Education in social work started at UNAM as a technical field of the National School of Jurisprudence in 1940. In 1969, it was transformed into an Undergraduate Program, and in 1974 the National School of Social Work began to function as such. This school teaches an undergraduate program in Social Work, and the specialization of Social Work in the Health Sector. It houses the Master’s Program in Social Work. Its students are directly related to the community through scholar practices, social service and a legal office.
